How is Handbag Size Measured?
When you're on the hunt for the perfect handbag, size definitely matters. But, how is handbag size measured?
Understanding the Basics of Handbag Measurements
Handbag measurements are typically given in four dimensions – length, height, width, and drop.
Length (L): This is the longest side of the handbag, typically measured from one end to the other. In most cases, the length refers to the horizontal dimension across the front of the bag. For example, in a tote bag, the length would be the side parallel to the zipper or the top opening.
Height (H): Height is the vertical distance from the bottom to the top of the handbag. It should be measured when the bag is standing upright. For instance, in a tote bag, the height would be the dimension extending from the base to the opening at the top.
Width/Depth (W/D): This dimension measures the handbag from front to back, indicating how much the bag can expand or its bulkiness. It is usually the shortest of the three dimensions.
Drop: The drop length is an important measurement of a handbag, referring to the length of the handles or straps from the top of the bag to their peak when hung. This dimension determines how you can carry the bag, such as by hand, over the shoulder, or crossbody.
These dimensions give you a pretty good idea of the size of the bag, so let’s get down to it.
How to measure your handbag
Measuring your handbag is a straightforward process that can be done with a simple measuring tape. Here's how to do it:
Prepare Your Tools: You’ll need a flexible measuring tape. This type is best for accurately measuring bags of various shapes and sizes.
Measure the Length: Lay the handbag on a flat surface. Measure the longest side of the bag from one end to the other. This is usually done horizontally across the front of the bag.
Measure the Height: Then, measure the height of the bag from the bottom to the top. Ensure the bag is upright when doing this. For most bags, this is the vertical dimension from the base to the top edge.
Measure the Width/Depth: Next, measure the width or depth of the bag. This is the distance from the front of the bag to the back. Place the measuring tape at the bottom of the bag (for more rigid bags) or in the middle (for softer, more flexible bags) to get this measurement.
Measure the Drop: If the bag has handles or a strap, measure the drop. This is the length from the top of the bag to the peak of the handle or strap when it’s hanging naturally. Hold the top of the bag and let the handle or strap hang down to measure this.

There are some things to note
Note the Shape: For bags that aren't rectangular or have an unusual shape, do your best to measure the widest and tallest points.
Record the Measurements: Write down each measurement clearly, noting the length (L), height (H), width/depth (W/D), and drop.
Double-Check: It’s a good idea to measure twice to ensure accuracy.
Why Do These Measurements Matter?
Measuring a handbag is crucial because it helps determine if the bag fits your daily needs and is comfortable to carry.
The size affects what you can put inside, from small items to larger essentials. The drop length tells you how easy it is to carry the bag over your shoulder or by hand.
Additionally, the right size ensures the bag looks good with your outfit and suits various occasions.
When buying online, knowing these measurements helps in making informed decisions, ensuring the bag meets expectations in size and style.
